COMMITTEE ON THE SHELTERLESS

COTS is a Petaluma nonprofit that assists those experiencing homelessness in finding and keeping housing, increasing self-sufficiency and improving well-being. The organization hadn't changed its branding in 30 years and was looking for fresh branding that would honor its history and mission. We interviewed COTS clients, leadership and donors to gain a deep understanding of how their programs work and how they transform lives.

Branding

The old logo was dated and was also difficult to work with in the multiple contexts the organization now needed. We wanted an icon that conveyed the idea of transformation, but we needed to honor the intention and feelings behind the original logo -- particularly because many in the community had positive associations with it. After careful consideration of the details and many conversations with stakeholders, we landed on the open door because it was both literally and figuratively relevant to the organization's mission and accurately communicated its brand.

Brochure

During the discovery phase of our branding project we learned that many of the clients at COTS were not aware of the full range of programs available to them. We recommended creating a simple brochure to clearly and simply outline COTS services. We chose a small form factor for the brochure so that it would be easy for people to keep in a pocket.
